Our first food ride, and one that predates the idea for this blog by a few weeks!
Come journey back in time with us, if you will, to the opening weekend of the Michigan State University Theater Department's production of "Grease". The weather was beautiful, the legs fresh, and the Lightning was unquestionably Greased. What better way to fill the long break between the matinee and evening shows than on a bicycle? Carly came to meet me at the Wharton Center, and we started rolling down south to the farmland part of MSU's campus. This is a great place to rack up the miles, since the roads are wide, flat, and (by Lansing standards) relatively pothole-free. Intersections are few and far between, letting you really get some speed going if you want! The rare motorist is usually pretty respectful of cyclists, too, so this area of town makes for a great ride as long as they haven't applied fertilizer to the fields too recently.
As we reached Jolly Road, the grumbling of our stomachs started to drown out the rumbling of the road, so we decided to loop back to the northwest and find a bite to eat. After a couple of grueling climbs up Aurelius Road (which contains the closest thing to hills you'll find in the area), we ended up at the Soup Spoon Cafe, which is just a mile or two from the heart of downtown Lansing, and has become a local fixture thanks to their relaxed atmosphere, creative and varied menu, and commitment to the community. (And, of course, the bicycle racks in front!) They also have a wide selection of wines and craft beers, for those who consider those an indispensable part of any good meal! Sadly, we didn't think to take photos of Carly's Greek wrap or my Acropolis sandwich, but rest assured that this is the last time we'll make that mistake!
